WHEN VOTING RIGHTS ARE DENIED On August 5, 1970, various sections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 are scheduled to expire unless Congress moves swiftly to extend the Act. One of the key provisions scheduled to expire authorizes the Attorney General to send Federal observers to oversee the conduct of elections in States covered by the Act. On May 13, 1969, such observers were sent into a number of cities and towns in Mississippi to observe Democratic primary elections.
