PREFACE.

Sit is a work of Charity to build resting places for the weary Pilgrims along Eastern roads, so must it be deemed meritorious to provide shelters for the combatants in the intervals of the Battle of Life. The wear and tear of mind and heart need the solace of quiet sympathizing thought. Such will be found in the lives and writings of the two Brothers here presented: men whose pursuits, though not dazzling to their fellowtravellers, were yet connected with the real progress of society, as well as its quiet enjoyments; for we agree with Mr. Carlyle, who says, that man's function "is not to taste sweet things, but to do noble and true things." The reader will find the two Wiffens to have been men whose deep and yet wide views, and graceful thoughts, in advance of their generation in their own society, are worthy of permanent record for the future use and pleasure of society.
