General $lectric plant in Erie. The partcially successful struggle at the Highland

Park Swiming pool during the past 2 au mers is also an indication of this. The participation of yourg peole in the Alex Wright election campaign, in the NAACP Washington mibilization, in the local participatisx activities around the World Feleration of

Democratic Youth festival, and for the coming Colonial Youth Day demonstration. these are only some of the indications that the youth ready to fight.

All of

That the youth.need to help guarantee victory, besides the support and participation

of the general progressiv movement in their struggles, is unity among themselves, unity with the general progressive movement and a strong LYL which can give leadership in these struggles and which can educate the young workers in the process of these struggles as to the relationship of their fight to the general progressive struggle, and the necessity for the eventual socialist re-organization of society.

is

During the past 7 months our LVL membership was increased by 100% from the orgİNKİ original 20 at the organizing conference to to 43. This/exactly 1/3 the objective set

the conference.

More important

is the fact that only approximately 1/2 of the 43

by

members are organized into a club on the Hill, which club functions sporatically, and the rem inder can be considered as members at large since they are not organized as yet inte en clubs.

What are some of the reasons for this:

2. Although some educational activity was conducted such as a leadership class on the theory and Practice of arxism, some special activities against trotskyism, and crtain other ■ discussions, this education was conducted mainly in a vacuem, and was not conducted in conjunction with any specific mass campaigns.

3.

There was no planned consistant program of educational, social and cultural activities for the membership and of such a nature which would attrac young

workers to the LYL.

There was no consistant leadership given to the application of the

organizing conference decisions as to the concentration in East Pitts urgh or any of

Above all our approach was narrow, general secterian, without real orientation to the winying of the working class and Negre youth.

It is very significent that we do not have among our membership as yet a single miner, single steelworker and only one or 2 electrical workers. This means that our leadership has not se yet succeeded in developing the United Front approach to the working class youth. An LYL in stern Pa. cannot fulfil its responsibilities unless it is based primarily among these sections of the population.

That therefore must be our objectives for 1950.

1. The building of an LYL of 150 members coming mainly from

electrical, steel, mining and Negre youth.

2.

To establish functioning LYL clubs on the Hill, in E. Pgh. on

the South Side and in one mining area to be selected in consultation with the experienced

That are some issues and movements that should be considered by us.

1. Support to the present iners strike, in the form of helping ganize relief compaigns and other types of activity which will help to non-mining youth in support of the miners. This will help us establish new contract – not only with youth in the city and county but also with many young 'minera.

Meny young miners now know of the existance of LYL as a result of the mass distri utien of the LYL leaflet fields last weekend. Here I want to pay special tribute to the LYL menbora from New York during the past 2. eks and have done such a marvelous
