PREFACE.

WHEN I first understood that some other

Gentlemen had undertaken an answer to Dr. M. I had thoughts of only publishing such portions of this Essay as related to points less particularly handled by them: but on more mature reflection, I determined on the present course. My reasons were chiefly these: First, it would have had so. much the appearance of writing in concert, that an accusation might have been brought against us as "accredited advocates" of a number of Divines; and that a system had been made out by a committee from the general body, to be sent into the world. Secondly, It occurred to me, that (tho'various persons writing upon the same specific subject would naturally tread a good deal upon the same ground, yet) if we differed materially in any points, we should probably correct one another; and the truth would be found somewhere: but, that if there should be a great coincidence, both of ground, argument, and conclusion, that it would the more manifestly prove, that the force of evidence alone had led to this agreement. I, therefore, determined not to see, or even know a sentence that others had advanced till my manuscript was finished.
