PREFACE.

EVERY attentive observer must have remarked, that an early familiarity with devotional forms, unless great care be taken to instil a correspondent feeling for the substance of devotion, is so far from promoting the rational worship of God, that, in many cases, it creates the pernicious habits of inattention and indifference. Even the most sublime and affecting strains of prayer and praise, re-echoed upon ears unconscious of their force and beauty, excite the less interest, the oftener they are repeated.
